Drop Your Shorts!
Deadline for entry for
Local Shorts 6 is noon on July 12, 2008. All accepted entrants
will receive one free lunch at the 2008 Shorties Awards at Zinc on the
26th. There will be four awards again this year: one
"Audience Pick" and one "Movie-Maker's Pick" for the "all-age
appropriate" and "not recommended for kids" sessions. The movies
will be shown on Friday, July 25
at The Lobo, the "all age appropriate" session will be held from 6-8pm
and the "not recommended for kids" session will be from 8:30-10:30pm
that same evening. The Shorties will be given at Zinc at noon the
next day. You do not have to be present to win, but please let us
know if you'll be there.
Local
Shorts
is a
non-profit short
movie festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico, held at the
historic Lobo Theater each August. The Shorts have been called
"Albuquerque's friendliest festival". Probably because of all the
friendly
volunteers who help. Or,
perhaps because of our
terrific "get to know the movie-maker" lunch at Zinc. That's not
the
name of it. Just the spirit of it. Maybe its because of the
friendly movie makers themselves, or
the fact that we have made a tradition of donating profits to local
charities...

Local
Shorts is a Non-Profit
Local Shorts is a Non-Profit which you can donate to via the United
Way (specified as "APS Foundation-Local Shorts"), or just send a
check! It is a
tax-deductible contribution. All money specified for Local Shorts
goes to Local Shorts with a pit-stop at the Foundation for bookkeeping-
there is no percentage taken away. This clearly benefits many
people, provides a voice via the Local Shorts movie festival and Story
Magazine. For information on how to become a
sponsor, please click here.
Local Shorts 6 has
received its first submission
Posted
January 29, 2008
Local Shorts 6 is
rolling with the first submission- "Girl Alone" submitted by
producer Stephen Hall, directed by Cary Brooks (see Local Shorts 4
Audience Choice Award Winner) and I saw Tim Boughn's name in there,
too. (See Local Shorts 5 and Local Shorts 3). "Girl Alone" is
accepted, and thanks for the entry!
Local
Shorts
(continued from

We
started in
2003
as a community gathering. The
next year
we decided to help gather books for Grant Middle School, and our event
was the starting point for
Monte
Vista Elementary's food and clothing bank. In
2005 we donated money to the APS Title I Homeless
Project. The Homeless Project helped many Hurricane Katrina
refugees that year, and of course, the more than 3,000 local homeless
students of APS. Yep, more than 3,000.
That number did the same thing to me. Actually, it wasn't the
number. A few little kids I know, who are homeless, they made me
want to do more. So, all of the profits of
Local
Shorts 4 went to making
"Story
Magazine". Click on the link there to learn about how its
more like "teaching how to fish", than just handing it out.
And that is where we are today. Shorts 5 just broke even, but
Shorts 6 will go to
"Story",
too. Its a good
thing. You can be part of it, if you like.
Make a movie.
Volunteer. Send us a
bazillion dollars. Even at a
trickle we will be a rain cloud in the dry, dry desert for someone, and
we will give their voice a listen: Local Shorts, or
"Story".

The Horse Animation
The horse in the frame menu comes from one of
the first "shorts", a series of horse photos taken by Eadweard
Muybridge. The shorts on the horse in the frame were not a part
of the original photos. A bit of history, dontcha know.
