Local Shorts 4 and Story Magazine
Wednesday, February 01 2006
Local Shorts 4 is scheduled to screen August 26 and 27, 2006 at the
Lobo Theater! The City Of Albuquerque has signed back on, and we are
helping the Homeless Project again.
This year 100% of the profits will go to producing a bilingual picture
book magazine, "Story" which is intended to promote literacy, and
encourage authorship. Read all about it!
In keeping with promoting voice via the Local Shorts festival, Story
Magazine will provide the opportunity for free, easy, reading material,
and an outlet for aspiring young authors to get their stories
published, and win $100.00.
Helen Fox at APS's Homeless Project will distribute the magazine to the
students served through her project. The first Story Magazine will be
published with the profits from this year's Local Shorts festival, in
September 2006. The next Story Magazine will be published with next
year's Local Shorts, or sooner, depending on profits and sponsorship
with this year's event.
There are 3,000 homeless students served via this project, so the money
will go to that scale of distribution. If there is enough sponsorship
to distribute to 6,000, that will go to a second issue of Story before
next Local Shorts. More sponsorship would lead to more issues. If there
are major sustained contributions, Story Magazine will be distributed
freely around the city as a quarterly.
A free, easy to read, nice looking bilingual picture book magazine
whose sole purpose is to promote literacy and encourage authorship.
That's this year's Shorts mission, folks. Tell me what you think!

Fourth Annual Local Shorts Film Festival Seeks Submissions
Albuquerque, NM
Albuquerque's friendliest film festival is seeking submissions for its
fourth year. The mission of Local Shorts, a festival instituted in 2003
by Albuquerque natives Dan Vaitkus and Jeff Tuttle, is to bring the
Albuquerque community together and celebrate the accomplishments of
local filmmakers. The festival accepts submissions in all genres of
films up to fifteen minutes long. Held in Albuquerque's historic Lobo
Theatre, the festival is a positive community experience and one of the
city's most encouraging events for filmmakers and audiences.
Local Shorts is a film festival with heart. In past years the festival
has included several short films by children as well as horror, comedy
and drama (all split into segments which are age-appropriate for the
audience); the festival has served as a benefit for the APS Homeless
Project and the Monte Vista Elementary School food and clothing bank.
This year 100% of the profits will go to producing a bilingual picture
book magazine, "Story" which is intended to promote literacy, and
encourage authorship. In keeping with promoting voice via the Local
Shorts festival, Story Magazine will provide an outlet for aspiring
young authors to get their stories published, and compete for $100.00
prize.
To see your film on the big screen and help out this worthy cause,
check out the Local Shorts website: www.localshorts.com for submission
information. Or call Jeff at 262-0236. Submission deadline is August 1
Story
Magazine Distributed
Friday, December 01 2006
Two days ago, I dropped off 425 color copies of
Story Magazine to Helen Fox at the Homeless Project, where she said she
would use and re-use the publicatons for tutoring purposes. The total
cost was $900.00 to print the 8 page full color booklets, most of which
came from Local Shorts 4- Kristin and I chipped in a bit, too.
Story Magazine is a free, unique, bilingual
(Spanish/English) picture book magazine, with the feature content
written by someone 18 years old or younger. The first issue was
written by a fifth grader at Monte Vista more than ten years ago, to
whom I paid $100.00 for the publishing rights. I am now
soliciting stories for the next edition, and will pay the author!
Ultimately, I would like to distribute "Story" for
free at the grocery stores etcetera on a quarterly basis. By
making a clutter free, graphically inviting magazine, we encourage
literacy and multilingualism for children and adults! Its a great
idea! C'mon, you know it is!
The next edition will be published as soon as
sponsorship allows. A
sponsorship for Local Shorts ultimately helps in the production of
"Story", but direct, earmarked contributions can be made soley to
Story, too!
On a personal note...
Wednesday, January 03 2007
Spotless, the original
star of
Local Shorts, has moved on. I kind of knew it was coming,
which is part of why he was on this year's t-shirts, that and he was a
quadruped, a fine symbol for our fourth year. I'll miss him.
