Local Shorts II: Not just a community event, its a community share point too!

This year, Local Shorts will be an event to bring the community together to celebrate local film makers, and we will use the event to bring in donations for local charities. Since submission and admission to this year\'s event is free, we thought we could ask people to bring in non-perishable food, school supplies, clean, nice clothes, or even sign up to donate time to help with Monte Vista Elementary\'s Clothing/Food Storage Bank, and/or the Homeless Project for all of APS. The APS Homeless Project serves 2,800 students around the city by providing food, transportation, and tutors for kids.

Donations will not be required for admission or submission. We'll just give ya the Shorts' evil eye ;).

The APS Homeless Project Helen Fox, with the APS Homeless Project, started the project ten years ago. Homeless students are unknown, they are not usually the faces you see panhandling. There are identifiers, but there is also concealment. Few want to be known as homeless. This project now provides food, transportation, tutors and channels to other necessities such as shelter for these students and their families.

"What we would like to prevent is the generational homelessness, which is what we are currently seeing," said Helen.

This does not have to be their culture, or be part of ours. Stand up. Sign up. Then have a seat in the theater, and enjoy the shorts.

Monte Vista Elementary School Food and Clothing Bank

In reponse to a growing sector of the community in these troubled economic times, Monte Vista Elementary School, a public school, has dedicated space and time toward an in-house clothing and food bank. Proximity is important when kids may or may not show up the next day to school due to a chaotic home life. The ability to respond to families, to even be able to pick them up in crisis situations, is necessary to anchor these families and help them become a part of the community. The Homeless Project enables staff at Monte Vista to deal with crisis, the clothing and food bank on site will be a resource used by many for this area of growing need. Since Monte Vista is an elementary school clothing for children ages six to twelve years old are needed. We could also use donations of new toilietries, hair accessories, socks and underwear. Any overflow of donated goods will go to other charities such as The PTA Clothing Bank, The Storehouse, Roadrunner, etc. Volunteer time is also needed, This year, Local Shorts will be an event to bring the community together to celebrate local film makers, and we will use the event to bring in donations for local charities.
